Letter to the editor: The voters already chose
To the editor:
I understand democracy is messy, but seriously Douglas County Commissioner Gene Dorsey? Dorsey was elected to the Douglas County Commission two years ago for District 4. This summer, Dorsey faced a primary Democratic opponent — Ethan Spurling. Spurling won the primary election by receiving more votes than Dorsey. And because there is no Republican running for that seat, Spurling should be the presumptive next Douglas County Commissioner for District 4.
But Spurling is back on the campaign trail because Dorsey is waging a write-in campaign, even though Dorsey lost the primary election. Dorsey is asking voters to write in his name on the ballot instead of voting for Spurling. Dorsey’s write-in campaign shenanigans hurt the Democratic Party. Instead of campaigning for other candidates on the ballot (like governor and senate races), Spurling now has to spend his time and resources campaigning for himself — campaigning in an election in which Spurling already beat Dorsey.
I don’t like sore losers, and I like Spurling’s energy and ideas, so I’ll be voting for Spurling. Spurling’s priorities include promoting progressive investments in community social services and opposing data centers. Ethan is accessible, transparent, and his priorities align with my Democratic values
