Letter to the editor: Rep. Schmidt dismissive of concerns
To the editor,
Representative Schmidt’s comments, as reported in the March 13 issue of the Lawrence Journal-World, show him to be dismissive of people who are concerned that “the GOP-led House allowed the executive branch to seize too much power. …” Whether or not people agree with the president’s policies is irrelevant to the issue of Congress abandoning its responsibilities.
Schmidt was elected to represent his constituents, not to rubber stamp what the leadership of his party does. Moreover, he was elected to represent ALL of his constituents, not just the ones who voted for him. In fact, he represents EVERY PERSON in our district, not just the citizens. He should be working toward compromises that will take account of various opinions. That is the hard work of a democracy. I hope we hear about that in his campaign for reelection.
Maggie Childs,
Lawrence
