To the editor:

One of the most striking moments of the generally forgettable Trumpapalooza in Dallas came during Vice President JD Vance’s keynote speech on Sept. 10 (later upstaged by Trump’s claiming the podium). At the end of a segment denigrating the Senate candidacy of James Talarico, which is sending shudders through the Republican establishment, Vance intoned, “I got to say, a guy that age who is so obsessed and focused on transgender children… I never want to see that guy’s web browser history.” This gratuitous bit of innuendo, insinuating that Talarico is a pedophile or a sexual predator, is ample grounds for a defamation lawsuit. Unfortunately, Talarico’s status as a public figure shields Vance from that possibility, as Vance surely knows. “… They go low …” Very low.
