Letter to the editor: Canceling history

To the editor:

The history-canceling prigs who would rename the Pinckney neighborhood in our city simply do not go far enough. So: Amos Lawrence, our town’s namesake, made his fortune on the backs of single, vulnerable women in his New England mills. Next, William Burroughs Creek, named for a wife-abusing, heroin-addicted novelist, obviously needs canceling. Then, Langston Hughes flirted with tyrannical Soviet Communism to the extent of traveling to the Soviet Union for Soviet propaganda purposes, among other things. Change that school’s name. Most egregious, however, are all the American Indian tribal names. These indigenous Americans enslaved one another long before Europeans arrived. Eliminate Massachusetts, Connecticut, et al.

Where is the petition?

David Upchurch,

Lawrence
