With the number of COVID-19 cases increasing and restricting the open hours and activities at the city recreation centers, our avid group of pickleball players has been forced to continue outdoor play at Lyons Park, when normally by now we would be playing indoor at Sports Pavilion Lawrence. Thankfully, the fall and early winter weather has been quite cooperative and agreeable. As the cooler north winds began to blow across the Lyons baseball field and onto the courts, it became increasingly tricky and challenging to play with plenty of miscues, as well as a bit chilly. Playing the games while bundled up in jackets, hats and gloves added to the challenge.

Many thanks to Derek Rogers and Tyler Fike of the Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department for purchasing and quickly installing heavy tarps to the fencing on the north end of the courts. Blocking the north winds has allowed us to continue playing outdoors. Kudos to the city for quickly helping solve this “problem.” The winds are blocked, but we might need some snow shovels soon!
