A Lawrence Community Shelter resident accused of pulling a gun on a child and another individual outside a Lawrence home was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
The incident occurred just before 9 p.m. on Sept. 17. A man told Lawrence police that he and his 11-year-old nephew were approaching a relative’s home and noticed a stranger looking at items on the side of the house. As the man approached the stranger, the stranger — later identified as 37-year-old Sean Steven Craig — allegedly pulled a pistol from his satchel and threatened the man and child. The man told police that he immediately retreated in fear for himself and his nephew.
Officers worked to find the suspect that night but were not successful, said Laura McCabe, a spokeswoman with the Lawrence Police Department, but officers had a description and worked with investigators to identify the man with the help of multiple camera sources, including privately owned cameras voluntarily shared with investigators, police body-cams and public cameras.
The address for Craig on the Douglas County Jail booking log is the Lawrence Community Shelter. Craig has felony convictions in Johnson County for drug possession in 2017 and 2012 and aggravated assault in 2016. He was also accused of vandalizing the city-supported homeless camp in North Lawrence two years ago.
