A 14-year old Lawrence boy is dead after a Saturday evening shooting in eastern Lawrence, while on Monday another teen has been charged with first-degree murder in the case.

Law enforcement responded to the 1100 block of East 13th Street at about 5 p.m. after receiving reports of a shooting in the area. Law enforcement found Kamarjay Shaw badly injured at the scene. Shaw, 14, was taken to a local hospital, where he later died, a spokeswoman with the Lawrence Police Department confirmed.

By Sunday afternoon, 17-year old Derrick Del Reed had turned himself into the Lawrence Police Department, after the department had asked the public for its help in finding Reed, while also warning the public that Reed was likely armed and dangerous.

Douglas County District Attorney Suzanne Valdez on Monday filed first degree murder charges against Reed in Douglas County District Court. Her office also filed a motion to prosecute the 17-year old as an adult.

Reed on Monday remained in custody at the Douglas County Juvenile Detention Center. He is scheduled to have a detention hearing on Tuesday afternoon, which is a proceeding used for juveniles that is similar to a first appearance in adult court.

Kamarjay Shaw, center, was killed in a shooting on March 18, 2023.

Meanwhile, friends and family members of Shaw began reaching out to community members about Shaw’s death and his story.

“Our loved one Kamarjay Shaw was a wonderful young teen and a joy to anyone he came around,” according to a Go Fund Me page signed by the “Dowdell & Shaw family” and organized by Jawaun Johnson. “His smile and charm will forever live on, at the young age of fourteen he touched the lives of those around him. He leaves behind family and friends that his light will shine on.”

The post continued by saying “Shaw spent his young life enjoying football and basketball, creating music, being adventurous in anyway, enjoying the outdoors, and doing acts that brought joy to himself and others. Kamarjay loved to learn new things that helped him grow and have a deeper perspective. He enjoyed creating videos to express himself and make others smile and laugh.”

Law enforcement agencies have released few details about the shooting or a possible motive. Police said they believe the shooting took place in the 1300 block of Maple Lane, but that the teen arrived injured at an apartment complex in the 1100 block of East 13th Street. Emergency radio traffic on Saturday evening indicated that law enforcement responded to the Maple Lane Apartments complex.

Lawrence Police Department spokesperson Laura McCabe on Sunday afternoon said Reed turned himself in to law enforcement and was taken to the Douglas County Juvenile Detention Center. The unoccupied car police were searching for — a dark 2015 Chrysler 300 — was found within the city limits and is being processed by investigators. Investigators have interviewed several witnesses and have evidence to believe the Shaw and Reed are known to each other.

Friends and family of Shaw are attempting to raise $15,000 to help cover funeral expenses. The fundraiser page asks for donations to be made on the GoFundMe page or to Peaceful Rest Funeral Chapel, 401 SW Harrison St., Topeka, Kansas, via CashApp. The funeral parlor confirmed that it is accepting donations for Shaw but said early Monday that final arrangements have not been made.

The GoFundMe page said the family is trying to raise $15,000, up from a previous amount of $10,000, by April 8 to give Shaw the “memorial he deserves, to honor his memory and say our last goodbyes.” The page had received more than 190 donations as of Monday afternoon and raised nearly $9,000.

The family of a 14-year-old boy who was killed in a shooting on Saturday has started a fundraiser to pay for his funeral service.

The fundraiser on GoFundMe for Kamarjay Shaw was started on Sunday morning by Jawaun Johnson and reads: “Our loved one Kamarjay Shaw was a wonderful young teen and a joy to anyone he came around. His smile and charm will forever live on, at the young age of fourteen he touched the lives of those around him. He leaves behind family and friends that his light will shine on.”

Lawrence police have yet to identify Shaw as the individual shot on Saturday but Shaw’s father, LaTouche Shaw, has been seen giving television interviews about the incident.

The fundraiser page asks for donations to be made on the GoFundMe page or to Peaceful Rest Funeral Chapel, 401 SW Harrison St., Topeka, Kansas, via CashApp. The funeral parlor confirmed that it is accepting donations for Shaw but said final arrangements have not been made.

The fundraiser page concludes with “Blessings, Dowdell and Shaw Family.”

As the Journal-World previously reported, police and sheriff’s deputies responded shortly after 5 p.m. on Saturday to the 1100 block of East 13th Street to investigate a possible shooting. On Sunday morning, the police department said that a “local teen” had been killed in the shooting. Police said the victim was male but did not release the name of the victim in Sunday morning’s press release.

The teen was taken to a local hospital where he later died, police said in the release. Other details surrounding the shooting have not been released by law enforcement.

A news release from police department spokesperson Laura McCabe on Sunday afternoon said Del Reed turned himself in to law enforcement and was taken to the Douglas County Juvenile Detention Center. The unoccupied car police were searching for — a dark 2015 Chrysler 300 — was found within the city limits and is being processed by investigators.

Investigators have interviewed several witnesses and have evidence to believe the parties are known to each other.
