A Lawrence teen is dead after a shooting on Saturday evening, and a person of interest in the case, 17-year-old Derrick Del Reed, turned himself in, according to news releases from the Lawrence Police Department.

As the Journal-World previously reported, police and sheriff’s deputies responded shortly after 5 p.m. on Saturday to the 1100 block of East 13th Street to investigate a possible shooting. On Sunday morning, the police department said that a “local teen” had been killed in the shooting. Police said the victim was male but did not release the name of the victim in Sunday morning’s press release.

Police said they believe the shooting took place in the 1300 block of Maple Lane, but that the teen arrived injured at an apartment complex in the 1100 block of East 13th Street. Emergency radio traffic on Saturday evening indicated that law enforcement responded to the Maple Lane Apartments complex. The teen was taken to a local hospital where he later died, police said in the release.

A news release from interim city spokesperson Laura McCabe on Sunday afternoon said Del Reed turned himself in to law enforcement and was taken to the Douglas County Juvenile Detention Center. The unoccupied car police were searching for — a dark 2015 Chrysler 300 — was found within the city limits and is being processed by investigators.

Investigators have interviewed several witnesses and have evidence to believe the parties are known to each other.
