The second brother involved in an incident in which a gun was discharged at a bar in downtown Lawrence was sentenced to probation on Monday.

Chance S. Gosewisch, 26, of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, was originally charged with one felony count of aggravated assault with a firearm, according to charging documents. As part of a plea agreement he signed in December 2022, Gosewisch pleaded to a lesser felony count of criminal threat.

The charge relates to an incident on July 10, 2021. As the Journal-World reported, police said at the time that officers responded to a call in the 1100 block of Massachusetts Street, near Brothers Bar and Grill, just before midnight for a disturbance involving guns. After arriving, police were told that two men brandished firearms in a threatening manner at bystanders before shooting into the air and leaving the area.

The other man involved was Gosewisch’s brother, Cade R. Gosewisch, 22, of Fort Scott. Cade was also charged with one felony count of aggravated assault with a firearm, according to charging documents.

Lawrence police arrested the brothers shortly after midnight at R Bar and Patio, 610 Florida St., according to the Douglas County Jail booking log.

Two men were listed as the alleged victims in the separate charges. Judge James T. George ordered the brothers at their first appearance to be barred from returning to 1105 Massachusetts St., which is the address of Brothers Bar and Grill.

On Monday, Judge Stacey Donovan sentenced Chance Gosewisch to six months in prison, which she then suspended to 12 months of probation in accordance with the Kansas sentencing guidelines.

Before he was sentenced, Gosewisch said that the incident at the bar was a major turning point for him and that he realized he needed to get his life together. He said that he was still getting back on his feet and reconnecting with his community and that he has planned a mission trip this year to Costa Rica with his church.

Cade Gosewisch pleaded no contest to one felony count of aggravated assault with a firearm in December 2021. Donovan sentenced Cade to 12 months in prison and ordered him to register as a violent offender for 15 years for using a firearm to commit the offense.

The registration as a violent offender was required by Kansas law and prison time was also required for using a firearm to commit a felony, but Cade’s defense attorney, Bradley Hook, filed a motion to depart from Kansas sentencing guidelines, asking Donovan to give Cade probation instead of sending him to prison. Hook’s motion to depart noted Cade’s age, 21 at the time of the incident, his stable work history and the fact he would be barred from owning a gun in the future as reasons that Cade should be spared from prison time. Donovan granted the departure, suspending Cade’s prison sentence to 24 months of probation, according to court records.
