The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has apprehended a man who has been wanted for two months following a high-speed pursuit through Lawrence on Dec. 29.
The man, Tyrone Leroy Alexander, 48, of Baldwin City, was taken into custody on Tuesday morning outside Linwood after a vehicle pursuit in Leavenworth County near the Douglas County line, according to a news release from the sheriff’s offie.
As the Journal-World has reported, Alexander was wanted on several outstanding warrants, including for charges of aggravated assault, fleeing or attempting to elude police and felony interference with law enforcement related to the high-speed chase through Lawrence. He was also wanted on warrants for probation violations for two separate 2015 convictions of interference with law enforcement and theft and criminal use of a financial card and theft.
The sheriff’s office had asked for the community’s assistance in apprehending Alexander for several weeks.
“We are grateful for the community’s help in apprehending him. We are very thankful for no injuries because evading law enforcement in high-speed pursuit is very dangerous and puts everyone in our community on the roads at risk,” Douglas County Sheriff Jay Armbrister said in the release.
About 11:40 a.m. Tuesday, deputies attempted to bring Alexander into custody in the Linwood area, and he fled the area in a passenger car. After a pursuit along county roads in the area, deputies conducted a tactical vehicle intervention to disable the vehicle on Kansas Highway 32 near 235th Street and took Alexander into custody, the release said.
During the pursuit, Alexander ran two vehicles off the road, the sheriff’s office said.
The warrant for the Dec. 29 incident was on charges related to a high-speed chase through busy streets in Lawrence after a deputy attempted to take Alexander into custody in southeastern Lawrence that morning. Instead, Alexander fled in a pickup truck leading deputies and police officers on a pursuit on streets that included Haskell Avenue, 19th Street, 23rd Street and Kasold Drive.
The Kansas Highway Patrol, Leavenworth County Sheriff’s Office and Eudora Police Department assisted on Tuesday.
