A Kansas City, Kansas, man has been found guilty of robbing a bank in Lawrence.
A federal jury found Davonte Chaney, 30, guilty of using a gun to rob the Truity Credit Union, 2221 W. 31st St., last summer, according to a news release from the U.S. Department of Justice.
Chaney has been convicted of using a semi-automatic pistol to threaten employees to get on the ground before taking an undetermined amount of cash from a customer service employee.
“Chaney’s criminal actions in order to get money subjected people who were making an honest living to a violent, terrifying ordeal,” said U.S. Attorney Duston Slinkard in the release.
As previously reported by the Journal-World, Chaney was indicted in October for one count of bank robbery and one count of use of a firearm in the furtherance of a crime of violence.
The robbery occurred around 9:30 a.m. on Sept. 21, 2021, said Amy Grose, a spokeswoman for Truity Credit Union.
The robbery was investigated by the Lawrence Police Department and the FBI, according to the release.
Chaney is scheduled to be sentenced by a federal district court judge on Aug. 16.
