Two individuals involved in a deadly shooting in Lawrence last month were formally charged in Douglas County District Court on Monday.

Mehki McDaniel, 20, of Topeka, was charged with one count of second-degree murder and six counts of theft in the shooting death of Topeka 18-year-old Peyton Whitaker. The second degree murder charge is a level-two felony and comes with a standard sentence of a little under 10 years in prison for individuals with no prior criminal record.

Judge James T. George kept a $250,000 cash or surety bond in place, which was the bond established in a warrant for McDaniel’s arrest prior to his apprehension. George said McDaniel also has an outstanding warrant from Arkansas, which listed no bond, meaning if McDaniel were to post the $250,000, he would still be held in custody on the outstanding warrant.

He is next scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 14.

Meanwhile, Ansley Fogle, 24, of Topeka, was charged with interference with law enforcement, a level-nine felony, and obstructing apprehension or prosecution, a level-eight felony. Both charges come with the standard sentence of probation.

George also kept a $5,000 cash or surety bond in place that was established in the warrant for her arrest. She is next scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 21.

McDaniel and Fogle appeared in court after they were transferred to Douglas County on Friday from McPherson County, where they were arrested.

Last week, Lawrence police indicated that they, along with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and McPherson County Sheriff’s Office, had arrested McDaniel and Fogle on Wednesday, the Journal-World reported. Police said the charges stemmed from an incident on Nov. 24 when Lawrence officers responded to reports of a shooting about 9:15 p.m. at a residence in the 200 block of Yorkshire Drive.

According to Lt. David Ernst, Lawrence officers arrived on the scene and found Whitaker, who had a gunshot wound. Whitaker was pronounced dead at the scene.
