A 20-year-old Topeka resident has been arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder and felony theft in connection with the shooting of an 18-year-old last month in Lawrence.

On Thursday, Lawrence police indicated that they, along with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and McPherson County Sheriff’s Office, had arrested Mehki McDaniel, 20, of Topeka, on the murder and theft charges, as well as Ansley Fogle, 24, of Topeka, on suspicion of interference with a law enforcement officer and obstructing apprehension or prosecution.

The arrests were made Wednesday and stem from an incident on Nov. 24 when Lawrence officers responded to reports of a shooting at around 9:15 p.m. at a residence in the 200 block of Yorkshire Drive.

According to Lt. David Ernst of LPD, officers arrived on the scene and located an 18-year-old male victim — later identified as Peyton Whitaker, of Topeka — suffering from a gunshot wound. Whitaker was pronounced deceased at the scene.

McDaniel and Fogle are currently being held in the McPherson County Jail pending extradition.
