DUI suspected in New Year’s Day head-on crash near Lawrence

The driver of a Jeep traveling the wrong way on U.S. Highway 59 south of Lawrence was allegedly driving under the influence when he caused a crash on New Year’s Day.
Neither that man nor the grandmother and grandson in the car he hit were seriously hurt.
Mitchell A. Johnson, 54, of Eudora, was arrested Tuesday at the scene of the crash on suspicion of DUI and other charges, according to Douglas County Jail records.
He was charged Wednesday with driving under the influence and transporting an open container of alcohol, both misdemeanors, and two counts of aggravated battery, both felonies, according to the complaint filed in Douglas County District Court.
The crash occurred just after 6 p.m. Tuesday on U.S. Highway 59 at North 1200 Road.

Johnson was driving a 2015 Jeep Wrangler northbound in the southbound lane when he hit a 2012 Toyota Camry head-on, according to a preliminary report from the Kansas Highway Patrol.
The driver of the Camry, a 74-year-old Ottawa woman, was taken to a Kansas City area hospital with suspected minor injuries, according to the report. A 6-year-old Ottawa boy riding with her, her grandson, had no apparent injury, according to the report.
Johnson was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital for evaluation of possible injury, according to the report.
Everyone involved was wearing a seat belt, according to the report.
Johnson made his first court appearance Wednesday afternoon, court records indicate. The Journal-World received his mugshot from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday.
