Authorities identify 23-year-old man killed in crash on South Lawrence Trafficway

A man has died from injuries he suffered in a crash Thursday afternoon on Kansas Highway 10 south of Lawrence.

The two-vehicle accident happened shortly after 12:30 p.m. at K-10 mile marker 385, west of Iowa Street, Sgt. Kristen Channel of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said in an email.

A 23-year-old Illinois man was driving a Toyota Camry westbound when his car — for reasons unknown at this time — crossed the center line and struck an eastbound tractor-trailer, Channel said. She said the Camry’s driver was taken by ambulance to the University of Kansas hospital in Kansas City, Kan., where he died of his injuries.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, a 37-year-old Mayetta man, was not hurt, Channel said. There were no passengers in either vehicle.

Authorities believe both drivers were wearing seat belts, Channel said. She said authorities would not release names Thursday.

The highway reopened about 4 p.m., according to the sheriff’s office. It had been completely shut down to traffic traveling in both directions between Iowa and East 1200 Road, which connects to Kasold Drive.

At the scene, the heavily damaged Camry had come to rest in the grass south of the highway. Broken pieces of the car and debris from inside the car were strewn around it. The tractor-trailer, which had a flatbed trailer, was stopped on the shoulder of the highway facing east.
