Police use Taser on man who was allegedly waving knife outside Lawrence business
Police used a Taser on a man who they say was wielding a knife and exhibiting threatening behavior outside a business in southern Lawrence.
The incident began about 5:35 p.m. Wednesday.
Officers were initially dispatched to a restaurant in the 2500 block of Iowa Street, where a man was reportedly acting erratically inside, Sgt. Amy Rhoads said in an email to the Journal-World. She did not specify the name of the restaurant.
Before officers got there, the man went outside, where witnesses reported he was waving a knife around at people near 25th and Iowa streets, Rhoads said.
“Officers quickly arrived in the area and attempted to de-escalate the situation, however, the suspect was non-compliant and exhibited threatening behavior,” Rhoads said. “A Taser was deployed and officers placed the male under arrest.”
She said the man was treated at the hospital, then taken to jail.
Jail records indicate that Stacy R. Wright, 49, was booked on suspicion of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in connection with the incident. A city of residence for Wright was not listed.
Editor’s note: Lawrence police had previously said only that the man had an “edged weapon.” In a response to follow-up questions to the Journal-World, police clarified that the weapon was a knife. The story has been changed to reflect that detail.
