The Environmental Protection Agency has extended an agreement with Haskell Indian Nations University that focuses on environmental education, workforce development and collaboration.

The five-year memorandum of understanding was signed on Tuesday, and it will continue a longstanding partnership, according to a press release from the EPA’s Region 7. The purpose of the agreement is to assist Haskell students in preparing them for careers in environmental fields by connecting them with EPA training, employment information and possible mentorship opportunities.

When resources are available, EPA Region 7 may connect Haskell students with mentors to give students greater exposure to environmental careers and potentially to the types of work performed at the federal agency.

“Haskell Indian Nations University is a tremendous partner for EPA Region 7,” EPA Region 7 Administrator Jim Macy said in the release. “Together we are promoting student learning, Tribal capacity building, and environmental stewardship. Haskell graduates are making a difference at EPA every day, and we look forward to more opportunities for Haskell students and EPA under this agreement.”

The agreement also creates opportunities for technical education and knowledge-sharing. EPA and Haskell can organize workshops, meetings, lectures and seminars and provide technical training in areas such as biology, chemistry, engineering, physical science, environmental science and waste disposal. The MOU specifically says Haskell will endeavor to serve as a scientific liaison to local communities, including regional tribes.

Additionally, the MOU highlights an opportunity for research collaboration. Both EPA and Haskell can coordinate research priorities, meaning Haskell could potentially participate in research sponsored by EPA Region 7 or working with other EPA offices.

EPA and Haskell have maintained an MOU since 1999, and the organizations signed their previous MOU in October 2022.
