KU advances to Final Four; here are scenes from the heart of the celebration in downtown Lawrence

The intersection of Eighth and Massachusetts streets was the main gathering spot for Jayhawk fans celebrating the Kansas's win over the Miami Hurricanes on Sunday. KU advances to the Final Four on Saturday, April 2, 2022, in New Orleans.

The University of Kansas men’s basketball team is headed back to the Final Four. Check back here frequently for scenes from downtown Lawrence following KU’s Elite Eight victory against Miami on Sunday.

4:30 p.m. The crowd is still large and dense, and a bit of Allen Fieldhouse’s soundtrack has made its way to downtown. Somebody has a big speaker and they are blasting “Sweet Caroline” for the crowd to sing along. – Austin Hornbostel, J-W Staff Reporter.

4 p.m. Standing at 9th and Massachusetts Street looking south, the crowd stretches far enough that you can’t see the end of it. Barricades have been placed along the side streets now to discourage traffic in the general downtown area. Motorists who were parked on Massachusetts Street but don’t want to get caught in the celebration are trying to get a law enforcement escort out of downtown, with some success. There are a large number of law enforcement officers downtown.

There’s also a fair amount of chanting going on downtown, including: “We invented basketball!” — Austin Hornbostel, J-W Staff Reporter.

3:45 p.m.: Before the final buzzer had sounded there was already a crowd closing down traffic on Massachusetts Street. Lawrence police had to help cars stuck in the middle of the street reverse out of the quickly swelling mass of KU basketball fans who congregated in the street to celebrate KU’s berth to the Final Four

As of 3:45 p.m. that crowd was growing quickly. All traffic should avoid Massachusetts Street – Austin Hornbostel, J-W Staff Reporter.
