The Lawrence Public Library is partnering with Haskell Indian Nations University and the Raven Book Store to celebrate the Wakarusa Wetlands this weekend.

On Sunday morning, local authors and artists will share their creative work and their connections to the wetlands. As part of the event, Daniel Wildcat, a member of the Muscogee Nation of Oklahoma and a longtime Haskell faculty member, will lead a special land recognition at the Medicine Wheel Earthwork located on Haskell’s campus.

The list of a dozen authors and artists slated to be part of the event also includes Haskell interim president Julia Good Fox, a member of the Pawnee Nation; Kansas Poet Laureate Huascar Medina; and Ken Lassman, a naturalist and author.

The event begins at 9 a.m. Sunday, and organizers encourage attendees to arrive at least 15 minutes early to allow time to walk from the road to the earthwork. A vehicle will be available for mobility assistance over the uneven ground for those who need it. To locate the earthwork, attendees should navigate to the intersection of Perimeter Road and Barker Avenue on Haskell’s campus, park on the side of Perimeter Road and walk south from there along the gravel road.
