Library, history museum among groups chosen as beneficiaries of 2022 St. Patrick’s Day Parade

Onlookers line Massachusetts Street Thursday to catch a view of the St. Patrick's Day Parade, March 17, 2016.

The Lawrence Public Library and the Watkins Museum of History are among the groups that will benefit from funds raised by the upcoming Lawrence St. Patrick’s Day Parade, the parade organizers have announced.

The St. Patrick’s Day Parade committee routinely gives tens of thousands of dollars to local charities as part of the parade activities. The parade group hosts fundraisers throughout the year leading up to the parade, with proceeds of the events going to pay for parade expenses and fund the selected charities.

For the 2022 parade — which is scheduled to take place at 1 p.m. downtown on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17 — the organization has chosen four nonprofits. They are:

• Lawrence Public Library Friends & Foundation, which provides financial support to the city-owned library in downtown Lawrence. The group plans to use money from the parade to boost the children’s reading program and its new mobile library vehicle.

• Watkins Museum of History, which operates at the corner of 11th and Massachusetts streets in downtown. The museum plans to use its parade proceeds to expand educational programing for children and improve access by working with a sign language interpreter and creating audio descriptions for its playhouse and family learning center.

• Lawrence Unchained Bicycle Co-op, which is a volunteer-run community bike shop and resource center for bicyclists in the area. The group plans to use parade dollars to increase the number of bikes it can provide to children.

• The Jefferson’s Foundation, which is a local organization that provides short-term resources for families in crisis. The organization plans to use its parade donation to fund more immediate support for children in Douglas County.

The last St. Patrick’s Day Parade produced $48,000 in donations that was split between six nonprofit organizations. Since 1998, the parade has awarded $1.2 million to local charities. For the 2022 parade, the group reviewed applications from 11 nonprofits before selecting the final four nonprofits.
