KU to host public tour, hike at Baldwin Woods Forest Preserve

Members of the public will have a chance later this month to tour one of Douglas County’s most pristine woodland areas as part of a University of Kansas open house.

The Kansas Biological Survey & Center for Ecological Research at KU will host a public tour of the Baldwin Woods Forest Preserve from 10 a.m. to noon on Oct. 30. The Baldwin Woods Forest Preserve, which is between Baldwin City and Lawrence along County Route 1055, is a National Natural Landmark and is home to a variety of sensitive ecosystems.

The preserve is typically closed to the public to protect its environment. There is no cost to attend the tour on Oct. 30, but registration is required. KU is limiting attendance to the first 50 people who register.

The tour will include a hike along a wooded trail to a high bluff that overlooks Coal Creek. Visitors will experience the oak-hickory forest in fall color and will be able to spot many historical features, KU officials said in a release.

People interested in signing up for the tour should email organizers at biosurvey@ku.edu.
