Lawrence Humane Society’s Clear the Shelter event coming up; adoption fees will be waived for an entire weekend

Lawrence Humane Society's Clear the Shelter is an opportunity to adopt pets free of charge.
The Lawrence Humane Society’s 2026 Clear the Shelter event is scheduled for the last weekend in August.
The weekend-long event at 1805 E. 19th St. is an annual occurrence at which pet adoption fees are waived. It is scheduled for noon to 6 p.m. Aug. 28, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 29 and noon to 6 p.m. Aug. 30.
Typically, adoption fees are $150 for adult dogs, $300 for puppies, $60 for adult cats and $125 for kittens, but those fees will all be waived during the event. Additionally, every animal adopted is spayed/neutered, up-to-date on vaccines and microchipped. Adopters will also receive a New Pet Parent Kit, which includes a starter bag of food provide by event partner Hill’s Pet Nutrition.
New animals will become available each day of the event, according to the Humane Society’s social media.
On Aug. 29, a variety of local businesses and vendors will be at the Humane Society, celebrating each adoption with goodies and treats for both adopters and animals going home. Also, on Saturday only, leashes, dog collars and cat carriers will be provided at no cost to adopters.
