Lawrence receives half inch of rain; chance for more over Labor Day weekend

Lawrence received about half an inch of rain from an overnight thunderstorm that lasted into Thursday morning.

Chad Omitt, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Topeka, said Lawrence received about 0.61 inches of rain on Thursday.

The area just south of Lawrence received about an inch to an inch-and-a-half of rain, he said.

Lawrence could receive more rain throughout Labor Day. Omitt said there was a slight chance of rain each day of the holiday weekend.

“This is going to be one of those cases where you have periods of showers and thunderstorms now and then, countered by days that are predominately dry,” he said.

The forecast shows between 20 and 30 percent of rain Saturday, Sunday and Monday with highs in the low 90s. Omitt said it wouldn’t be a totally gray weekend but would be partly sunny and partly cloudy.

“I think by and large, it doesn’t look like any day is going to be a washout at this point,” he said. “There will be some storms around, probably during the overnight hours and the afternoon, some hit-or-miss type storms.

“Since everybody is going to be outdoors and the storms are in the forecast, just keep an eye on the sky and be aware of the weather,” he added.
