Douglas County Commission postpones discussion on renovation plans for former Borders building

Douglas County commissioners had a lighter-than-normal agenda at their evening meeting on Wednesday — made lighter still after discussion about a plan to renovate the former Borders building in downtown Lawrence was postponed.

The meeting, which took place a few hours after the County Commission wrapped up its 2024 budget deliberations, was originally supposed to include an update on the plans for the building at Seventh and New Hampshire streets, which were filed last year by an entity led by Lawrence businessman Doug Compton. But that discussion didn’t happen and was instead pushed back to Aug. 9.

The Lawrence City Commission was originally slated to discuss the project and an associated request for tax incentives this week as well. However, Compton requested that the city’s discussion be postponed until Aug. 1, and the county on Wednesday followed suit with its own postponement.

In other business, commissioners unanimously approved a site plan for a storage building for an existing propane distribution business located at 296 East 1260 Road. The storage building will be used by Heartland Energy Inc. to house trucks and store propane parts.
