A portion of 19th Street is closed for construction on Tuesday, May 12, 2026.

A utility and road construction project near 19th Street and Maple Lane is nearing completion, and the City of Lawrence expects 19th will reopen in the first week of June.

The city posted Tuesday on social media about the final steps of the Maple Lane improvement project, which has been ongoing since 2024. The project has included a variety of street, water main, sewer and stormwater work, and 19th has been closed to through traffic for asphalt installation between Haskell Avenue and Harper Street since mid-April of this year.

The city’s post said contractors were finishing the asphalt work and installing new speed cushions on 19th, and that the street should be reopened to residents of that area next week. Beginning the week of May 25, pavement markings will be installed, and the road is expected to officially reopen the week of June 1.

“We know this closure has been a long one, and we appreciate everyone’s patience as crews complete the final steps!” the city’s post read.
