Notebook: Wayne Selden Jr. plays on tender ankle

Norman, Oklahoma ? Kansas University’s starting shooting guard, sophomore Wayne Selden Jr., missed seven shots and didn’t score in 18 minutes Saturday against Oklahoma.

“Looking back now I wish I wouldn’t have played Wayne,” KU coach Bill Self said after the Jayhawks’ 75-73 road loss. “He was not effective and couldn’t move very well. Of course we only had seven guys. I thought all our guys tried real hard.

“I don’t think it’s any worse (for playing in game),” Self added.

Selden sprained his ankle in the second half of KU’s overtime win over West Virginia on Tuesday.

“I decided the second half we’d start him and then if he didn’t do anything I’d sit him the rest of the game (he played five minutes the final half). I would have done that but we put him in at the end in case he was open he’d have a better chance to make a three than Landen (Lucas). That’s the reason he came in late. He’s a tough kid. He’ll be fine.”

The road: This marked the first time in 10 years the Jayhawks dropped three straight regular-season conference road games. Toward the end of the 2004-05 season, Kansas lost at Texas Tech (79-80 2OT, 2/14/05), at Oklahoma (63-71, 2/21/05) and at Missouri (68-72, 3/6/05).

This, that: KU has trailed at halftime in the last four games. That’s the first time that’s happened since since the 1993-94 season, when it fell in holes of 30-28 at Kansas State on Feb. 12, 30-26 at Oklahoma State on Feb. 16, 39-34 vs. Missouri Feb. 20 and 58-34 at Nebraska on Feb. 23, 1994. KU is 2-2 in the last four games. The 1994 Jayhawks went 1-3 in such contests.

Big game: Self stressed that Saturday’s game meant a lot despite the fact KU had already won the league.

“To me it does something,” the native Oklahoman said. “I’ve got a lot of family around. I didn’t exactly grow up loving the Sooners (as Oklahoma State player). I think it’s a big game.”
