A federal grand jury on Thursday indicted a 27-year-old Linwood man, accusing him of assaulting a deputy U.S. marshal in an October 2010 incident in North Lawrence, according to federal court records.

Joshua D. Sexton faces a maximum eight years in prison if convicted. He was arrested Oct. 28, 2010, in the 500 block of Locust Street on suspicion of absconding from his parole in a 2005 conviction for aggravated indecent liberties with a child in Leavenworth County, and federal prosecutors allege he assaulted a deputy marshal at the scene.

After his arrest that day, Lawrence police believed they saw drug paraphernalia, possible drugs and a small explosive device in the area, so they called in a bomb squad from Leavenworth County.

Federal authorities have won a conviction against another man, Joseph Henry Hibbs Jr., for methamphetamine distribution, and in court documents in his case, prosecutors accused Hibbs of letting Sexton — while he was absconding from his parole — stay in a camper he owned in North Lawrence.
