I have never flown and after 9/11 I never will. If I can't get there by boat, train, bus or car, I don't need to go.
I was terrified of flying for years, but I finally flew for the first time last year. I was scared, but I have flown again since. I try not to change planes, as takeoffs are the worst for me. Hate turbulence as I seem to be the only person who gets ill from it. We are hoping to take a vacation at the end of the summer and will probably fly. Not sure if I can stand flights longer than a couple of hours.
Flying is pretty cool. Ask your doctor for a prescription of xanax. It takes the edge off.
You are more likely to die from the flu than an airline crash.
Average annual totals over a 20 year period.
Killed in car accidents 42,116
Killed by the common flu 20,000
Killed by murders 15,517
Killed in airline crashes 120
I was like you grammaddy, but I finally did. I was petrified. The kid who went with me, who had never flown, LOVED IT. One of these days, I hope to make it to Hawaii. But I hate long flights.
Nope, not this year...... had to sell my plane
China's a little too far to drive to.
Not really a vacation, bit it's the only place I'm going.
IF god had meant for me to fly, she would have given me wings. i love riding the train.
Dang! I worked nights for years but wasn't born with headlights!
If imaginary god meant for you to roll, he would have given you wheels.
I dont think the fear is irrational. However, it does take a certain resolve and frame of mind to get over it.
I am afraid of intergalactic travel although as of this date there have been no known cases of human deaths as a result.
We might go to meteor crater and the grand canyon in the fall. It depends on how much we have left after upgrading the engine/drivetain in the vette. 12 seconds or bust.
Yes, of course we are flying. Virginia this year.
bcman - that is a beautiful place to visit. I just love that area. There was a little place called Gilbert's in Portland last time we were there. Huge steaming bowl of mussels - the best! Have fun!
if i can just remember where i left my keys to the plane...
No, I would rather see the countryside. Besides if your flight is 8 hours or less, why bother. You will lose that much time just messing with using the plane. Oh, and Arizona wont be on my list of places to go.
Flying has become a huge hassle. No liquids, pay for each piece of luggage, show up extra early, take your shoes off, etc, etc. When I can swing it time or money wise, I take the train. It's comfortable and luxurious compared to flying, and if you're only going to Chicago, it's really not that much longer. If I'm going to California, I'll fly though. I love the train, but not enough to spend three days on it.
I've been invited to a wedding in South Carolina on Memorial Day. A friend suggested leaving the driving to Greyhound. I've taken Greyhound on shorter trips, but hadn't considered it for this one. Rates round trip with 21-day advance purchase are just too sweet to pass up! The money I save on transportation can go towards a couple of nights at Motel 6 and a couple of days with a rental car.
Yes. Savannah!!! Would love to drive and take our time going through Tennessee and the Smokey Mountains, but have heard horror stories about the traffic in Atlanta. No thanks!
I think the only planned vacation we have this summer is to Branson so I doubt we'd need to fly. Although I'm hoping to see some flying rolls over at Lambert's on the way there!
Their food is good (and you won't go away hungry). But go about 2 hours before you think you'll be hungry because of the wait! The first time I went, I had no idea it was all you can eat and the waiter asked me if I wanted another chicken fried steak. It was so loud in there I couldn't hardly hear him so I just said 'yes', thinking he asked if I wanted more water. Big surprise when ANOTHER huge plate came a few minutes later.
It was pretty late by the time we finally got to sit down and eat and by that time, the only rolls being thrown were at customer request.
I've never been before so thanks for the suggestion about arriving early. We'll have a couple little ones with us so I'll make sure to bring a coloring book or two.
The best part of traveling is the getting there. My son and I will be backpacking near Mesa Verde Colorado, stopping along the way to camp, hike, bike, and consume every bit of being away from today's society we can. The last thing I would want to do is get on an overpriced, overcrowded plane with rude people and employees. Flying used to be fun, I wish my son could have experienced that.
What's a vacation?
