Kansas University’s athletics budget is anticipated to go up about 5 percent next year, to a total of $90 million.

The Kansas Athletics Inc. Board of Directors on Tuesday approved the proposed KU Athletics budget for fiscal year 2017.

Operating revenues and expenses are expected to be $90 million for the coming year, up 5 percent from Kansas Athletics’ operating budget of $85.8 million for 2016, Kansas Athletics CFO Pat Kaufman told the board.

“The big message is, we are 5 percent bigger,” he said. “A good chunk of that is the Big 12 revenues are going to be up.”

Kaufman said the additional revenue was coming primarily from an increase in the NCAA conference budget, plus moderate increases in KU’s Williams Education Fund annual drive, ticket revenues and other sources.

The increased revenue will be used primarily to cover increases in health care costs and team travel costs, Kaufman said. Specifically, he said, there will be an additional football road game, and two additional football flights due to the location of road opponents.

For the present fiscal year, which has two months left, KU Athletics is on track to end the year with a “slight surplus,” Kaufman said.

Kansas Athletics Inc., which manages and oversees intercollegiate athletics for KU, is a university-controlled affiliate corporation of KU. The two entities have separate budgets.
