University of Kansas police got two counterfeit cash reports last week, an unusual crime on the KU campus.

In one case, according to KU police crime logs, someone passed a counterfeit $5 bill at QuikTrip, 1000 block of East 23rd Street, on Dec. 1. The counterfeit bill was then passed off to a KU student, who tried to buy food with it later that day.

In the other case, someone used a fake $10 bill to make a purchase Nov. 28 or Nov. 29 at Watson Library, according to KU crime logs.

KU police Deputy Chief James Anguiano said there’s often more of this type of crime around the holidays, as more money changes hands.

“It’s good that our campus retailers are spotting this,” Anguiano said. “If you pay with cash, know what your money feels like, know if it looks weird … If you get change and the bill doesn’t feel right to you before you leave the counter, have them check it.”
