Lawrence police still investigating accidental shooting of 10-year-old boy

Lawrence police continue to investigate the accidental shooting of a 10-year-old boy on Friday night.

Around 7:10 p.m., police responded to a home in the 6200 block of West 22nd Court for a report of the accidental shooting, Sgt. Trent McKinley said. The boy was shot once in the abdomen with a handgun, McKinley told the Journal-World.

The boy was transported to the trauma center at Stormont-Vail hospital in Topeka where he underwent surgery Friday night for injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening, McKinley said. Police and hospital personnel declined to give an update on the boy’s condition Saturday night.

Conditions surrounding the shooting did not appear to be criminal, McKinley noted, but police would not disclose the boy’s name, who fired the weapon or other specific details in the case.
