Boy, 10, accidentally shot at Lawrence home

A 10-year-old boy was accidentally shot Friday evening at a Lawrence home, police said.

Around 7:10 p.m., Lawrence police were called to a home in the 6200 block of West 22nd Court on a report of the accidental shooting, said Lawrence Police Sgt. Trent McKinley. The boy had been shot once in the abdomen with a handgun, McKinley said.

The boy was transported with critical injuries to the trauma center at Stormont-Vail hospital in Topeka. As of 8:30 p.m., he was preparing to undergo surgery but his injuries did not appear to be life-threatening according to hospital staff, McKinley noted.

Police would not disclose Friday night who fired the weapon.
