Perry Ellis reaches 1,000-point milestone

Kansas guard Wayne Selden Jr. (1), forward Perry Ellis, center, and guard Kelly Oubre Jr. celebrate with Kansas forward Landen Lucas (33) after Lucas took a charge from Baylor forward Rico Gathers (2) during the second half, Saturday, Feb. 14, 2015 at Allen Fieldhouse.

Kansas University junior forward Perry Ellis cashed a layup with 12:44 left in the first half, then banked in a jumper 38 seconds later to give him 1,001 points in his Kansas University basketball career.

“It feels great. I’m blessed to be in this position. It’s really an honor,” the 6-foot-8 Wichita native said Saturday after becoming the 56th player to top the 1,000-mark at KU.

He finished with 18 points off 7-of-11 shooting (4-of-5 from line) and grabbed six rebounds in KU’s 74-64 win over Baylor in Allen Fieldhouse.

“I don’t mean this as a negative. I’ve coached him three years. He leaves me wanting more,” KU coach Bill Self said. “He leaves me saying, ‘He got 18, but should have had 20. He got six rebounds, but should have had nine.’ I haven’t thought that of late. I think he’s playing closer to his ceiling now than he ever has.

“I’ve had high expectations for him from Day One,” Self added. “I’d say he’s gotten close to where we thought he could be. He’s done great. He’s been consistent. I thought his rookie season it took him about two-thirds of the season to get comfortable and be aggressive. For the most part I think he’s had a great run here. If he were to stay all four years he would put himself in a situation he could be one of the 15 leading scorers in the history of the school which would be pretty cool. I’m happy for him.”
