A Lawrence woman is dead and her grandson is in police custody after an incident late Monday night in northern Lawrence, police said.

Officers were called to an apartment at 1200 George Court just before midnight Monday for a report of a stabbing, said Lawrence Police Sgt. Trent McKinley. The caller, a 16-year-old boy, told police he found his grandmother, 67-year-old Deborah Bretthauer, dead in the home.

The boy had been living in the apartment with his grandmother, McKinley said, and he called police from a friend’s home in the neighborhood.

When they arrived on scene, police noted obvious traumatic injuries on Bretthauer, McKinley said.

The boy was taken to the Investigations and Training Center at 4820 Bob Billings Parkway for an interview, McKinley said. Shortly after he was arrested and taken to the Douglas County Juvenile Detention Center on suspicion of first-degree murder. He is currently being held without bond.

Police do not have any other suspects in Bretthauer’s death and do not believe the public to be in any potential danger, McKinley said.

The suspect’s identity has not been released.

The George Court apartment building was blocked off by yellow police tape Tuesday as a Lawrence Police forensic investigations vehicle and other police units sat parked nearby.

A trash area at the site was also taped off, and a dumpster was covered up and hauled away from the scene.
