Lawrence woman arrested on suspicion of attempted second-degree murder after alleged stabbing

A 39-year-old Lawrence woman was arrested on suspicion of attempted second-degree murder Monday night following a stabbing in the 1800 block of East 23rd Street.

Shelly Michelle Hammer was booked into the Douglas County Jail at 10:20 p.m. after Lawrence Police responded to a report of a possible stabbing in the parking lot of 10 Market Place, 1800 E. 23rd St. Upon arrival, Lawrence Police Department spokesman Sgt. Trent McKinley said, officers found Hammer and a 26-year-old Lawrence woman who had visible injuries on her face and neck.

McKinley said the two women had been drinking together and arguing at a bar a few miles from the parking lot before traveling in a vehicle driven by another person.

The victim told police that the argument had continued in the vehicle and that she told Hammer, who was riding in the back seat behind her, to get out of the vehicle. At that time, she alleged, Hammer grabbed her from behind and began stabbing her several times in the face and neck with a small pair of scissors.

The vehicle’s driver then separated the two women and left the scene on foot, McKinley said. Police were notified of the incident after the victim then sought help from employees at a nearby bar and grill.

The victim was taken by ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital and then transferred to a Kansas City trauma center for more treatment, McKinley said.

After an interview with officers, Hammer was taken to the Douglas County Jail on suspicion of attempted second-degree murder. She is being held without bond.
