Lawrence woman remains in critical condition after car accident

A Lawrence woman remained in critical condition Monday after a crash in Neosho County on Oct. 24, according to her husband.

Deborah Young, 55, of Lawrence, was traveling north on U.S. 169 about one mile south of K-39 when she was struck by Marvin Groff, 79, of Jay, Okla., who was driving south in the northbound lane, according to a report from the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Young was flown to Freeman West Hospital in Joplin, Mo. Her husband, Brett Young, said Monday that his wife had “a little better than a 50-50” chance at being transferred to the University of Kansas Hospital on Tuesday.

Groff was flown from Neosho Memorial Regional Hospital to St. John’s Hospital in Tulsa, according to accident report.

Brett Young said doctors informed him on the day of the accident that Deborah Young had a zero percent chance of surviving the accident.

“She really beat the odds,” Brett Young said. “She’s still going.”
