Douglas County commissioners will consider granting a temporary business permit Wednesday to allow an on-site trailer to be placed on U.S. Highway 56 where the Kansas Department of Transportation is working on three bridge replacement projects.

The trailer would be placed northwest of the highway intersection at East 1600 Road. The permit would allow the trailer to be on the site through Oct. 15, which is when KDOT expects to finish the bridge projects.

Commissioners will hear public comment on the proposed permit when they meet at 6:35 p.m. Wednesday at the County Courthouse.

Since April 18, a 2.5-mile stretch of U.S. 56 from East 1400 Road to Sixth Street in Baldwin City has been closed because of the bridge projects. Hamm Inc., of Perry is the primary contractor on the projects, which are estimated to cost about $4.1 million.

KDOT officials have said the highway is scheduled to reopen in mid-October, in time for Baldwin City's annual Maple Leaf Festival.
