A car was struck by an eastbound train shortly after 11 p.m. Saturday at Seventh and Maple Streets, said Lawrence police Sgt. Anthony Brixius.

The driver of the car turned onto the train tracks by mistake and the car got stuck on the tracks. Bystanders were able to help the driver and two passengers to leave the car before the train struck the vehicle.

There were no injuries but alcohol was believed to be a factor in the incident.

That crossing apparently can be confusing, with side streets coming in at oblique angles. Didn't an elderly couple get stuck for similar reasons a few years back and the woman was killed?
Maybe a change is called for.

"There were no injuries but alcohol was believed to be a factor in the incident."

Maybe change THAT, instead of spending thousands of dollars for something that won't fix what isn't broken ???

Alcohol isn't the problem with that crossing, but it can make it worse. Maybe when some elderly member of your family gets killed there, not because of alcohol, but maybe because it was dark, or foggy, or they were in unfamiliar territory and became confused because of the unusual layout of that crossing, maybe then you won't be so mean-spirited.

Then saving a life might be worth thousands to you too.

paulveer - hopefully you can see from the posters below that I wasn't trying to "be so mean-spirited". I understand that places can be confusing and unfamiliar, but: #1- noone can make the world a totally safe place no matter how much money you throw at it; and #2- this certainly didn't seem like the case here when it looked like one got arrested (DG Co jail log) for OUI.

Or perhaps put up a warning sign stating that the crossing is not idiot proof.

As far as the unusual layout of that crossing goes, that crossing has gates. Common sense dictates that anyone wishing to turn onto the street after the tracks do so after passing the crossing gate. Not before. But as I already stated, it's not drunk/idiot proof.

"Care to guess which college or University these idiots attend?"

Ooh ooh ooh! Is it a local one?

Maybe the city should spend money on hiring someone to stay at that crossing and hold the hand of everyone crossing it.
