LHS grad identified as Topeka murder-suicide victim

A 2008 Lawrence High School graduate was a victim in a murder-suicide in Topeka over the weekend.

The body of Kahlyn Heine, 22, was discovered Saturday morning in an apartment at 238 S.W. Gage Blvd, according to Topeka police.

Police say Heine was shot by Jeremiah Campbell, 26, who then shot and killed himself. Officers were dispatched to the apartment complex after a tenant reported finding a bullet hole in the wall of her apartment.

Topeka police spokeswoman Kristen Veverka said they could not verify the relationship between Heine and Campbell, but said they both lived at the apartment.

Heine had just begun a job as a special education teacher at Shawnee Heights Elementary School after graduating from Washburn University earlier this year.

“She was a tremendous teacher with a great deal of potential,” said Marty Stessman, superintendent for the Shawnee Heights school district. Stessman said that counselors from the district were brought into the school to assist students and staff.

Police have not released a motive in the shooting, and are asking anyone with information about the case to contact Detective Scott Dickey at 785-368-9029
