2 McLouth men taken to hospital after crash

Two McLouth men were transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital after their vehicle collided with a semitrailer full of soybeans on U.S. Highway 24-59, 100 yards east of the Midland Farm Store at 11:22 a.m. Tuesday.

According Douglas County Sheriff’s Officer Sgt. Steve Lewis, 20-year-old Stephen Elston III, driving a 1994 Ford Ranger pickup truck, failed to slow down as the semitrailer turned into a private driveway and rear ended the semitrailer.

The driver of the semitrailer, Shiloh Burris, 34, of Topeka, declined medical attention at the scene. Both Elston and his passenger, 25-year-old David Blanton, of McLouth, sustained injuries in the accident and were transported by ground ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Elston was also cited by law enforcement for following too closely behind the semitrailer.
