? Lawrence High’s Thomas Irick placed second in singles Tuesday at the Emporia tennis invitational. Irick went 2-1 to help the Lions finish third among six teams.

The LHS doubles team of Matt Grom and Pace Leggins also went 2-1 for a second-place finish.

LHS coach Chris Marshall said he wasn’t overly pleased or displeased with the third-place showing.

“We’re still pretty rusty,” the LHS coach said. “We haven’t had a lot of practice time. There’s definitely room for improvement. I can’t be too disappointed with third place.”

Topeka Hayden won the tournament, and Andover placed second.

The Lions’ Victor Andrade went 1-2 to place fourth in singles, and Matt Mikel and Jason Lee teamed to go 1-2 for a fifth-place finish in doubles.
