4 local golfers finish first round of 6A state boys golf tournament in top 50

Four local golfers, two from Free State and two from Lawrence, finished in the top 50 of the individual leaderboard after the first day of the 6A state golf tournament in Mayetta at the Firekeeper Golf Course.

Free State also finished the day 12th in the team rankings with a collective score of 328, which was 40 strokes above the par. Two teams, Blue Valley North and Shawnee Mission East, are tied for first by finishing the day at par.

Firebirds A.J. Kimzey and Henry Thompson finished the day tied for 32nd by finishing five strokes above par, which secured their spot on the second day. Lawrence’s top two golfers Jackson Lind and Corbin May-Bryant finished tied for 46th by shooting a 79 (+7). Fellow Lion Andrew Kirkwood shot an 84 on day 1, putting him tied for 63rd.

Cash Nelson shot an 85 that put him tied for 69th individually in the first round, and Raleigh Jeter finished 17 strokes above par for an 89 score that put him tied for 80th. Brady Johnson shot a 91 that put him tied for 85th, and Bob Leatherman finished one stroke behind Johnson and closed out the opening day tied for 89th.

The second round will start at 10 a.m. on Wednesday.

Tonganoxie’s Lachlan McRae qualified for the 4A state tournament in Hesston and concluded the first round tied for fourth by shooting a 71, which is par at the Hesston Golf Course. McRae is two strokes behind Reece Roberts and Regan Kueker, who are tied for first.

At the 3A state tournament, Perry-Lecompton finished the first day in ninth place at Lake Shawnee Golf Course in Topeka. The Kaws finished 66 strokes above par with a 346 team score.

Toby Wagner finished the first day five strokes above par, which put him tied for sixth individually. Ethan Tolbert finished tied for 45th with an 85, and Logan Herman is tied for 78th after shooting a 97 in the first round. Colton Bahnmaier placed 81st through the first round by shooting a 98, and Easton Graves shot a 108 for 90th on day 1.

Bishop Seabury’s Jace Hoffman is qualified for the 1A state golf tournament in McPherson and finished the first round tied for 25th after shooting an 84.
