Lions pitching leads to two weekend wins

? Cam Solko and Adam Rea combined for a no-hitter, and Lawrence High’s baseball team defeated Norman North, 9-1, on Saturday.

Solko (1-0) pitched the first four innings, striking out four and walking just one. Rea pitched the fifth.

The Lions broke a scoreless tie with six runs in the third inning.

“We had kind of a slow start, and then we erupted for six runs in the third,” LHS coach Brad Stoll said.

Matt Sutliffe started the Lions’ big inning with a single. C.J. Roush delivered the knockout punch with a three-run double.

Third baseman Shane Willoughby preserved the no-hitter in the fifth when he robbed Norman North of a hit by making a backhand stop of a ball hit down the line.

“Solko and Rea were really great today, and Shane Willoughly made an unbelievable play at third base,” Stoll said.

In Friday’s late game, Garrett Cleavinger pitched a one-hitter as Lawrence defeated Edmond Memorial, 12-3, in five innings. Cleavinger struck out nine in the Lions’ season-opening victory.

The Lions will entertain Blue Springs South at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
