Jayhawks add mammoth offensive lineman to 2012 recruiting class

March 12, 2012

Nearly six weeks after national signing day, the Kansas University football program continues to add prospects to its 2012 recruiting class.

KU officials announced Monday the addition of junior-college offensive lineman, Aslam Sterling, a 6-foot-5, 360-pound tackle from Nassau Community College in New York.

Sterling started every game of his two-year stint at NCC, helping lead the Lions to a 19-2 record and earning all-Northeast Football Conference honors during both seasons.

Sterling attended Bayside High in Queens, N.Y., before moving on to NCC. He earned all-Borough and all-City honors while playing both center and right guard at BHS. A native of Springfield Gardne, N.Y., Sterling chose KU over interest from West Virginia, Syracuse, Rutgers and Buffalo.

He is scheduled to graduate in May and will join the Jayhawks in June. He will be eligible to play during the 2012 season.

Head coach Charlie Weis’ latest addition brings KU’s total recruiting haul this offseason to 23. Three players — quarterbacks Dayne Crist and Jake Heaps and wide receiver Justin McCay — already are on campus and two of those three will count toward the numbers for KU’s 2011 class. That puts KU’s official number for the Class of 2012 at 21, leaving room for Weis to add a few more fifth-year transfers that he promised back on signing day in early February.
