Investigation ongoing in veteran’s death
Lawrence police continue to investigate the death of a 27-year-old Iraq veteran and whether it was connected to a fight he was involved in hours before he died.
Kim Murphree, a police spokeswoman, said Friday that there was no new information to release. Police said Nicholas J. Sardina died Feb. 25 after medics and officers were called to a medical emergency in the 1500 block of Tennessee Street. Police said through the course of the investigation they determined Sardina was injured earlier in a physical altercation in the 300 block of West 14th Street.
Sardina’s girlfriend said she understood he had been at a party at a house in that block and that he had sent her a text message early on Feb. 25 saying he had a bottle broken over his head.
Sardina is from Clarence, N.Y., and he had attended both Kansas and Kansas State universities, where he also played on club hockey teams. He was a sergeant in the Kansas National Guard and served three tours in Iraq from 2006 to 2007 with the Army’s 1st Infantry Division.
