Kitchen fire damages home Sunday night

A kitchen fire Sunday night damaged a home in the 1600 block of Massachusetts Street, said Division Chief Eve Tolefree, a Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical spokeswoman.

Tolefree said the fire was reported at 9:32 p.m. Sunday, when firefighters located a fire and extinguished it in the kitchen. The Douglas County chapter of the American Red Cross was providing assistance to the displaced occupants, and on Monday afternoon fire investigators had not yet determined a specific cause or damage estimate, Tolefree said.

A separate fire at 11:42 a.m. Saturday caused an estimated $4,500 in smoke damage to a duplex after crews discovered a fish tank with the top light housing burned off inside a residence in the 2700 block of Harrison Place. Tolefree said firefighters at the duplex discovered heavy smoke but no flames when they arrived. Firefighters were able to ventilate the residence and remove a dog that was housed inside a kennel. No one was home at the time of the fire, she said.
