Two people on a motorcycle were critically injured Sunday night after the driver lost control on U.S. Highway 24-59 north of Lawrence.

Daniel Blazic and Christina Reed, both of Hoyt, were taken by air ambulance to area hospitals, Kansas University Hospital in Kansas City, Kan., and Stormont Vail Regional Health Center in Topeka, with life-threatening injuries.

The accident occurred about 5:30 p.m. Sunday near Midland Junction, between East 1300 and East 1400 roads.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Blazic and Reed were traveling west on a 2008 Kawasaki motorcycle when Blazic, who was driving, lost control of the motorcycle as he tried to pass a semitrailer truck. Both were thrown into the ditch. Neither person was wearing a helmet.

Condition reports were not available Sunday night.

Alot of wrecks lately. People slow down and concentrate and be safe. Hate to see people get all torn up and killed due to unattentive driving. And one last thing....STOP TEXTING AND DRIVING!!!!

I used to text, but realize how dangerous it is while driving. I see distracted drivers and it seems like they all have one thing in common - texting.

I don't recall reading ANYTHING about texting or innattentive driving in the above article.

Wonder if this was another deer incident, given the time of day. There was one outside of Topeka the past few days when a deer collided with a motorcycle. Lot of critters out there looking for food and water these days.

Good thing I don't use the moniker "observant".

24 highway between Lawrence and Tongy is the local drag strip. I drive this road several times a day. Hardly ever any cops. Who knows what the cause of this crash was but there are a lot of speeders on this stretch of road. Beware.

Wellman Road is East 1400. This wreck would have been just West of there on 24 Highway. Pulled over for all the emergency vehicles going north of Tee-pee Junction. Praying for everyone's recovery.

The originalmarticlemstated it was a collision between a car and a motorcycle so the driver of the car could have been texting

Just to clear things up the guy driving the bike is my uncle and he doesn't even know how to text so that was not the cause of this accident and we still don't know what was.

Hope everybody makes a speedy recovery and is ok. I ride daily and can say it is a risky task under normal circumstancs then you throw in any other hazard and a crash can easily happen, especially at 60+ since he was passing then it was probably far greater than that. That's why I wear appropriate safety gear when I ride. They don't ask you if you want to opt-out of wearing helmet when you sign up to play football do they? I think it's a shame that people choose to not wear a helmet, even if it is legal.

Things to note are ...tried to pass and not wearing a helmet. These are never good things when your on a motorcycle. Like I said before slow down and pay attention to your surroundings and you will possibly have a better outcome.

tbaker: Midland Junction is not between Lawrence and Tongie, but to the west. Agree, that section you mention is a racetrack! Hope all recover; lots of motorcycle wrecks recently!
