KU Hospital receives award from EPA for its efforts to reduce waste

The Environmental Protection Agency recognized Kansas University Hospital on Tuesday for reducing its volume of solid waste.

The hospital used recycling, waste reduction, environmentally preferable purchasing, education and community involvement to divert more than 540,000 pounds of solid waste from local landfills, according to a statement from the EPA.

The hospital received a 2011 WasteWise Gold Achievement Award for waste reduction on Tuesday. It tracked the volume of waste it was able to reduce using a voluntary online reporting system from the EPA called Re-TRAC, which generates reports and calculates reduced emissions and environmental impacts.
