Lawrence High girls lose rhythm, fall to Olathe North, 43-34

A struggling Lawrence High offense didn’t get any favors going up against Olathe North’s Jessica Sheble.

The 6-foot-3 junior dominated the inside, posting 20 points, 14 rebounds and nine blocks in North’s 43-34 victory over LHS on Friday night.

“It’s hard to simulate (her size), but we knew it was coming,” LHS coach Nick Wood said. “When that happens, that can’t be an excuse.”

The Lions were able to get good shots early, building an 11-8 lead before North’s Jabria Leggett hit a buzzer-beating three to end the first quarter.

From there, LHS couldn’t seem to find its rhythm offensively. The Lions made just 13 of 49 shots (27 percent).

“We competed pretty hard, but at the end of the day, they were getting loose balls. They were getting the offensive rebounds. They were getting the extra possessions,” Wood said. “Those little things were the difference in the game.”

Following a Christina Haswood three, LHS cut the lead to 37-30 with 6:16 remaining.

The Lions weren’t able to get many shots up after that point. Thought LHS had just nine turnovers in the first three quarters combined, it had nine giveaways in the fourth quarter.

“We were just giving them the ball,” LHS junior forward Monica Howard said. “Those were valuable possessions that we needed.”

As a result, the Lions scored just four points in the final 6:16 and no points in the final 3 1/2 minutes.

“It felt like just when we were about to turn the corner, make a big-time run, we didn’t value it enough and we lost our composure,” Wood said.

Howard led LHS, posting 12 points on 5-for-10 shooting with a team-high nine rebounds. Haswood added eight points off the bench, which included 2-for-3 three-point shooting.

North also held a huge advantage at the free throw line, where it made 18 of 32 shots. LHS finished just 5-for-12 from the stripe.

The Eagles also out-rebounded the Lions, 42-26.

Sheble, who made her first six field-goal attempts, finished 7-for-11 from the floor and 6-for-7 from the free throw line.
