Three Lawrence men charged in alleged sexual assault of woman

Three Lawrence men were charged Thursday in connection with an alleged sexual assault Tuesday night.

Two of the men, a 31-year-old and a 36-year-old, were charged with rape and are being held on $75,000 bonds. The third man, 26, was charged with aggravated sexual battery and is being held on a $30,000 bond.

Officers responded to an apartment in south-central Lawrence shortly before midnight Tuesday regarding an alleged sexual assault earlier in the evening, according to police.

The victim told officers she was with several other people at the apartment, and the group was consuming alcohol. At some point, the three men allegedly had nonconsensual sexual contact with the woman.

The three men were interviewed at the Lawrence Police Department’s Investigations and Training Center, 4820 Bob Billings Parkway. Following the interviews, all three were arrested.

According to a public records search, none of the three men is a registered sex offender, and none has any previous felony convictions in Douglas County.

The rape charges carry a maximum penalty of more than 54 years in prison, while the sexual battery charge could be punished by up to 11 years. The suspects all received a court-appointed attorney and are scheduled for their next court appearance Dec. 13.

The Journal-World generally does not name sex crime suspects unless they’re convicted.
